Volkswagen Group of America

Architect: VOA Architects

The Volkswagen headquarters project included the renovation of an 185,000 square foot space housing a new reception area, a service corridor, a conference center, two showrooms, and the focal point of the space—a monument steel and glass atrium staircase connecting all five office floors. Four angled, single story stair structures were constructed and installed to create the parallelogram design for the stairs. Each stair unit is made of glass and terrazzo tile treads with LED lights built underneath the risers and railings of steel and glass. Free standing lacquer panel millwork cabinets with 103 inch LCD screens mark the ending of each level. Each floor houses six conference rooms with high end audio visual systems and two pantries. The first floor contains a lobby, a service corridor with a mail room, IT storage, and a film studio as well as a cafeteria, fitness center, locker rooms, two car showrooms, and a conference center with a skyfold partition. The two car showrooms were designed with terrazzo tile, stretched fabric ceilings, wood flooring, automotive paint, and LED and track lighting. Additionally, a 20 foot projection screen, wall murals, fabric wrapped panels, ACT ceiling systems, and electric glass sliding doors were included in the design. The remainder of the project included a new glass front vestibule, a 40 foot exterior aluminum, LED backlit sign structure, roll down fire shutters, and an elaborate smoke exhaust system for the new atrium stair.
